At the top of the Alps, about 1/4 of the atmosphere is below you, so the pressure is 3/4 of an atmosphere. On top of Everest it is half, which will kill you or damage your brain permanently. Unless you're double hard.
The air attenuates the higher you go, but even at 100 miles up satellites are brought down after a few years because of the drag. The solar wind can blow ions around the Earth for tens of thousands of miles into space, creating Van Allen radiation belts that are dangerous to astronauts.
