Not sure if this is the right area, but this question has been bugging me for some time. Could a human skeleton swim in water if it were alive that is, or would it just sink to the bottom of the swimming pool? I know that they can operate swords and shields, as seen in many films, but could they swim?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Mammalian large bones are filled with marrow and would sink. A 'living' skeleton would need to expend a lot of energy with it's non-existent muscles just to stay off the sea bed. Bird bones on the other hand have air filled cavities so it is possible that they may be neutrally buoyant and so birds skeletons would only need relatively weak non-existent muscles...

If they can operate swords and shields I don't see why they couldn't swim.
Is this for real?
you need to watch Pirates of the Caribbean.
Watch very closely and see if any of the ones that get thrown overboard start swimming back to ship
No, the skeletion would have no muscles and therefor be unable to move.
hey would need mussels

sorry
*groan*

A skeleton would float until the water got into its bones and made it heavier than water.
Then it could do the crawl along the sea bed

Sorry, redcrx, have not seen any of those films, but may see them soon. Are those ships operated by a skeleton crew, by any chance?

Yes, this question is for real, welshyorkie; would I ever ask a silly question?
Well, it has been known..........................

Warning... do not take seriously anything portrayed in 'Pirates of the Caribbean', it is entertaining, but very silly, we could devote a thread to the silly things in 'PotC' there is a mass of material.
jomifl.......<<<A 'living' skeleton<<<...??

If it is a human skeleton it cannot be living.

Are you suggesting that my post was not in any way serious?

:)
My award for question of the day so far!!
Hi Sqad ...hence the quote marks around 'living' I just found the utter silliness of it appealing.
this is a trick -question! It wouldn't be allowed into the swimming pool without a swimming costume and trunks or a cozzy would be elasticated so would probably pull the bones out of their sockets! You can't fool me!
A skeleton walks into a bar and says, "A pint of lager please".
"Would you like anything else?", replies the barmaid.
"Yes", says the skeleton, "A mop!"
This might help you JonnyBoy12 !
Maybe humans could too ! ;-))
