When you get an Xmas present you hate!

What do you do when a relative buys you an Xmas present that you really don't like? Such as an ornament/vase/picture that they would expect you to put on display but you can't stand it, or it just doesn't go with anything? Or maybe perfume that you would never wear?

Do you hide it? Only put it out when they visit!? Tell them you don't like it??

If I know which shop they got it from I take it back and get something else - but don't tell them!

Act graciously then recycle at a later date. Chances of them remembering what they give you are pretty remote.

I tend to put them on display for a couple of months, then move them to another place out of sight and then get rid of them! I have never been asked by anyone what happened to their treasured gift, but if they did I would claim that unfortunately I dropped it and it got broken or I have moved it to another room!

You wrap it up for them next Xmas as you know it is their taste.

put it out when they visit and then stuff it back in the cupboard when they go. Either that say the cat, that is if you have one, broke it by accident, they can't blame you then eh?

I tell them it wasn't to my taste and to please not buy me stuff like ornaments or perfume again.

I drop it on purpose - my MIL thinks I am very very clumsy.

The only people who buy me anything know my tastes (apart from stepson who bought me a gargoyle last year) and I usually get asked what sort of things I would like.

If it was someone I cared a lot about, then I would put it on display when they came to my house or wear the perfume just for them, but if it was from somebody I don't see often or care much about, I give the gift to a charity shop - done this many times !

if it's OK sell it on ebay. Unopened perfume always sells well.

My mil gave me one year a hideous cheap pair of pink Siamese cats. I had barely up wrapped them when my 3 year old reached up and grabbed one and knocked its head off. Stunned silence. I want to giggle historically but managed to make the appropriate sad noises and comments about super glue and never know the difference. Two days later the cat, the real one knocked over the other one.

I have a drawer of unwanted pressies that I 'regift' or use as raffle prizes.

The really hideous stuff goes straight to the charity shop.

Ornaments & pictures go to far flung corners of the house, I get over the vase thing by always forgetting to buy flowers......

I put to the charity shop, or have a couple of times had padded satin pink coathangers from MIL once for my 23rd birthday and once for my christmas, think I was in the bad books. Poor hubby had to listen to my rant about it. Gave them back to her for mothers day.

I've got a box full of wedding presents (15 years) that sits in the loft, I'll never stick the stuff on show and I haven't the heart to get rid of it, some of it was quite expensive, so it'll stay where it is.
