Christmas Meat Dilemma
Went to order my turkey crown and ham joint this week from my favourite butchers only to discover that what cost less than £50 last year was going to cost nearer £100 this year. Any supermarket recommendations for turkey crowns (fresh or frozen) to feed 8 - 10 and ham joints to feed 12? I have all the brochures and prices don't vary that much but I am not spending £100. The turkey doesn't have to be fab but the ham has to be wonderful (I want an uncooked, off the bone type - don't know the actual name for it). Thank you.

So she knows about meat. Last year when she was here she went to the local market (Kempton) and bought a horseshoe ham for half the price of the butcher/supermarket. I was a bit dubious about buying meat from a market but she said it was really good. Maybe you could research a decent butcher at the local market and get the ham from there.
I do not see the appeal of crowns. My sister insists on getting them. It's like you tell the butcher you actually want them to remove the tastier bits, the great bits you can hold on to and bite into, so they can sell them separately, and just leave you the slicing bits that one can get in a frozen dinner any time of year. Wow ! Celebration time or what ?
Money is not an issue but I am not going to spend more than I have to - only an idiot would spend £60 for something they can get for £30.
We buy a turkey crown as I can't stand having a whole turkey just hanging around, it's always too big for the fridge and I worry that I will end up giving someone food poisoning. My children don't eat meat off the bone so it's not a big deal (himself likes the turkey crown as their is no waste).
