Why does Santa wear red?

Whilst dressing the Christmas tree last night my son asked me why Santa wears the red outfit,can anyone enlighten us?
Whilst we're about it,Merry Christmas to all ABers!

I think originally he wore green, and then coca cola changed it to red for a Christmas advertising champaigne.
always COCA COLA !
Before Coca Cola, there were 'versions' of Santa in all sorts of colours, red being just one. Coca Cola happened to adopt the bright red one, which became popularised to the extent it is.
Are they different in other countries? A friend goes to Lanzarote and she reckons they are blue.

Thanks folks,its funny 'cos Nick did say to me that it was something to do with Coca Cola but I thought it went back further that Coke had been around,you learn something every day!
Whilst we're on the subject, does anyone else think the current ad is a bit creepy ? Whatever happened to 'The Holidays are coming!...'.
