I have been looking for somewhere to take my 3 year old son for a day out, i love the look of Lapland UK but it is to expensive and has sold out any ideas of similar places

Why not try a steam railway? Our lads absolutely loved them when they were tiny (in their mid-twenties now and still do). Our local one (Great Central Railway at Loughborough) does some good Christmas events, as does Severn Valley Railway.
If it's Thomas you're looking for, Nene Valley Railway near Peterborough has the definitive loco, actually name by Rev Awdry. It was an excellent day out years ago when we visited and I'm told they're even better these days.

Sorry, I forgot to mention the Battlefield Line at Market Bosworth. Quite a bit smaller, but possibly cheaper.
