Has anyone bought a TV from Argos. I was quite surprised when we finally purchased a TV, one for bedroom, that before you can purchase the TV
they take all your home details, to check to see if you have a TV Licence, and if it shows you don't, then won't sell you one.
Do other electrical outlets do this, or just Argos.

I think they do that in most places.
Not from Argos, but Comet did the same to me. They didn't take my details until after I'd bought the TV though, and said they had to pass it on the the licensing people.

evianb i actually thought it was a cheek, like checking up on you, it's the BBC that gets the lions share of the licence fee, so not really sure why they do this. We have a licence, but i still thought it a bit much to ask.
Does that mean they wouldn't sell us one? My H is over 75 so by law doesn't have to have a TV Licence.

I think it's really rude, actually. Saying they won't sell you one, if you don't have a license! What if it's for someone else?!
Question Author
Jemisa, not sure, but as under 75 they asked for all the home details. If i had refused, then no tv from there, or perhaps anywhere.
I don't think they can actually check there and then if you have a licence and they wouldn't refuse to sell you a TV. I believe they just have to pass on the details of anyone who purchaces a TV to the licence people.

If you bought a TV for someone else and have no need for a TV licence yourself then you simply inform the licence people of that should they ever bother to contact you about not havign one.
that is quite bizarre I was going to say the same thing as fliptheswitch does it mean you cant buy a tv for someone else?
Question Author
that's strange, hadn't thought of that. And i did buy one as a gift, and had it delivered, and no one asked me the recipients age.
To be honest, I think you just probably got served by a jobsworth!
Perhaps its a new regulation, 3 years ago we bought a new TV for my daughter on line (from Dixons) no Qs asked then. She's still got it & its fine.

that is what the woman asked me, for our home address and details, and said that we couldn't buy one if we had no TV Licence. Once i gave her all the details, she put that into the computer, and checked, and once ok, was able to buy, i thought it was bizarre.
Question Author
perhaps it is a new regulation.
"She's still got it & its fine." Lol.

As opposed to what, Jem? It blowing up shortly after, because you hadn't informed them of your license?! :P
Question Author
its a bit outdated, 2007, but it's as i said.

As far as I know it has been a regulation for a good few years. It certainly applied 2 years ago and I bought from a very reputable company.
Question Author
so not alone, perhaps i should have said no, but i didn't want any more hassle.
I can understand why you lol fts, but strange as it may seem some people think if you buy 'on line' the goods are shoddy or not in good working order.
I just wanted to clarify that it was in and still is V/good working order.

I bought a tv from Argos a few months ago and they never asked anything.. :o
I wasn't poking fun, Jem, it just made me chuckle... it's been a slow day :))

Do people really think that about online?
