My friend has just got a PhD and we want to buy her something we can personalise but that she'll use and isn't a cliche (i.e. a clock).

Any ideas? So tricky!

Is a clock a cliche?  I never heard of that!  Watches, cufflinks and tankards are cliches I've heard of, but clocks - that sounds pretty original to me!

Get her a dog with a personalised name collar!!  Or a cat.

Seriously though, short of jewellery and tankards there's not that much I can tihnk of.  You can go for the personal touch without engraving though - e.g., a painting of a place that means something to her.  Good luck!

Actually a framed picture is an excellent idea - thanks!  She's an arty one as well, fab.
Well I'm glad, and slightly surprised, to have been of genuine help.  Good luck finding that special print/painting/photo! :-)
Why not buy an italian charm bracelet, that way you can personalise it with charms.  Check out www.gillyandstripes.co.uk they have a huge selection of charms and are really reasonable prices !!!!
