I have recently been "helped" by my daughter to lighten my wardrobe and am now trying to dispose of dozens of plastic and wooden coathangers.....

Charity shops do not want them, nor do market traders who sell clothes.....I have 4 dustbin size bags full of them.....Is the only solution to take them to the tip ? what do other people do ?

Take them to the tip.
Getting rid of the wooden ones ?!? I could understand wire and plastic but I prefer wooden.

Strange if they can't be recycled though. Check your council website in case they have a better alternative to tipping.
put them on freecycle, if no takers then take to the tip
We have a local recycling website called Freegle. I got rid of loads of coathangers on this - up to 12 people wanted them so they must have a use. Blue Peter Christmas decoration comes to mind lol
I was about to suggest freecycle as well
we have a bit at our tesco for unwanted hangers of all kinds.
Sell them on eBay
I used to take all my wire ones to the local dry cleaners.
Do a search... 'coat hangers wanted *your town*' and you might find someone asking for them. A couple of people are asking on Derby freecycle for example.

i frequently get my trousers dry-cleaned.

the dry-cleaners always welcome hangers
Argh! I am always on the scrounge for coathangers for craft projects
I'm convinced that they breed in my wardrobe.
