wax jackets

came across an old wax jacket from the 80s in my loft my 15yr old daughter likes it but its a bit smelly afer yrs in the loft can you wash them or does this ruin the waxiness i would imagine it would , no label on coat to tell you

You can wash them, and then rewax them. You get tins of wax. You rub it all over like shoe polish, and then hang the jacket on a coat hanger, and use a hair dryer to melt all the wax, so it soaks in to the fabric and then dries evenly.

I did mine in a cool wash with no powder or conditioner, it made it less smelly but it did need re-waxing afterwards to restore its fully waterproof condition.
If its a Barbour or Belstaff its worth money on ebay.

After rewaxing, they small all nice again.

But you can't wear them in the car or your seat gets all waxy.

Yes, or do you have an outdoor clothing shop?

We have one of those hunting, shooting and fishing type shops near the casino. They sell it there.

The shop is opposite our local lap dancing club. That may be just a coincidence.

I'm pretty sure you can get them re-waxed by the manufacturer too - expect it costs a bit though.

Back in the day, when I was a mad biker, Sketchley's Dry Cleaners used to dry clean and re-wax Belstaff and other waxed jackets. They may still have this service. Worth a call to ask.
The only one I can find on the net is http://www.connoisseu.../wax-jacket-cleaning/ and it looks expensive to me :-((

you can, sherrard, but worth it to extend the life of the jacket, and there's a lovely "lived-in" look, one doesn't get with a new one..................

I didn't realise that Belstaff jackets were waxed (and this has reminded me that I have got a lovely black Barbour that I must have worn about five times in all the time I have had, just have to find it now - might be handy in this flipping weather).

DT is right ... you can't really go out in a waxed jacket until it's got that lived in look.

Which is a dilemma, obviously.

The best solution is to wait until your mum's looks "just right", then buy your mum a new one, and pinch her old one.
