Compare Uk And Usa Prices
12 Answers
After being robbed in broad daylight by my local supermarket ;-)
I wondered if prices in the USA were a lot cheaper. Is there a site
anywhere that shows the comparative prices of an average family
shop.

you have to take the whole picture into account though when looking at cost of living across countries. For instance, when we lived in the US, some foods were cheaper and some were not, taxes were more, houses cost less, medical insurance more, education cost more, some consumer goods cost less, flowers and plants were outrageously expensive.
You'll often find items on sale in the US priced in dollars that are on sale in the UK for the same figure in pounds, i.e. 50% more. In the past, it was said this was because of the bigger population in the US, retailers could sell for less, because their quantity of sales was higher. We are now in the EU, whose population is more than double that of the US, (734m v 314m) but have those prices come down? Not a bit.
I would echo Heathfields sentiment. The single largest disappointment i have had about the formation of a single european market, which promised so much in terms of economies of scale and hence cheaper prices, is that it has never materialised that way.
Why is it that a CD will sell for say $10 in the US and £19 over here?

Not everyting`s cheaper in the US. Don`t forget as well, that their ticket prices don`t include tax so that is extra at the till. Food is quite expensive there now - a cheap plastic container with a bit of take-away (slice of salmon, mash and veg) can be $13 and tips of 19% are the norm in restaurants now. A glass of wine in a bar is more expensive than London. A small shop in the supermarket can be very expensive.
