Refund For Purchase From An Online Retailer

Hi, recently I pruchased an external soundcard from an online retailer. I wasn't very happy with the product and so sent an e-mail telling them that I wanted a refund within the 7 day 'cooling off' period. For some reason they didn't reacieve the e-mail, so I had to send another after 11 days of owning the product. This is how they repiled to my query:
"Customers are expected to research the item they are purchasing before they buy it, the product will work as it has been specified therefore there is no reason to install an item to see how it will work as you should already know. And this cool off period you advise off, you did not even contact us until the 11th, that is 12 days I believe, even though this point is irrelevant I think it is valid."
Now I've already stated I contacted them within 7-days, but they seemed to have pushed that to the side now anyway, and still argue that I wouldn't have any grounds to return the item because I've installed it. In a previous e-mail they wrote you are allowed to 'inspect' the goods, but installing it is different (for those that don't know, because it's an external card this is just a process of plugging a cable into my computer).
Do I have any legal grounds here? From my point of view they are completely in the wrong, and I've never had such problems with other online retailers before when returning goods.
Can anyone help me out?
