How much would you spend on an engagement ring? Carat weight? Somebody said a months salary? Does it has to be diamonds?

I read an interview with a jewellery designer in a newspaper just the other day and he said that most people now spend between 3 and 15 grand - I think the people he associates with must be pretty rich! Really what matters is how happy you are with the ring, not the cost. They don't have to be diamonds although again that's traditional - mine is three diamonds and a ruby.
