Don't get sucked in (sorry about the pun!) to their claim of "No loss of suction ever, no never, not a jot" because that is simply not true! Upright Dysons do however have a very good "on board" tool arrangement, meaning you dont keep having to attach hoses all the time.
I/We at the moment are using a "Vax Big Bubble", which is very powerful, light, and reasonably cheap at less than half the price of the Dyson, but the tools are a bit of a pain as you have to keep connecting them before use!

I think the most highly rated vacuum cleaner at the moment is "Henry", but it's not an upright. Hope this helps.
Miele are very very good and reliable vacuum cleaners.
If you want an upright then I would recommend SEBO..Suitable for all floor types and comes in different model specifications but both Miele and Sebo are not cheap...
You mention Dyson ..is that because you want a bagless? The two above need bags.
Sad to say I would not touch an actual HOOVER nor a Dyson come to that.
