...that whenever I go shopping, everything I want is either on the top shelf, too high for me to reach, or on the bottom shelf, too low for me to bend down?

Strange. The stuff I want they stop stocking.
i have a similar complaint - i am disabled and have trouble walking. Everything i want is at the back of the shop!
I believe it's called "strategic placement"...if you can't get it, you don't really need it!
Get a shop assistant to assist you.
Do it online and get it delivered!
First you need to locate the product in the shop, then you go to try and find an employee, by which time you cannot remember what it is you wanted to buy.

If there is no assistant in sight I ask another customer who looks more able to reach, never been refused so far.

I used to be one that got asked so the circle turns.
Shops usually have assistants. Even The Pound shop does.

Same in Libraries. I always have to get on the floor to get the book I want. I am sure the number of times I have to grovel like this must be completely disproportionate
