I paid for trousers in M&S with a gift card and i added cash to make full payment

if trousers aren't suitable - what way will m&s pay back. need to know this as niece may have to return them. thanks

Having read it quickly,I think the cash part that you paid may be refundable, BUT the part paid by Gift Card will only be refunded as a Gift Card. That's only my interpretation.
