I have a ‘good’ pair from the optician that l wear when reading indoors, l just want a nice pair for when l go out for a meal or shopping.

My optician, who's been to university and that, tells me that they're perfectly fine for reading.

Poundland. Ive literally just done this last week!! Went into my local optician for an eye test which was long overdue. After test at hey told me that new glasses/lenses would cost - £900!!! I said Thankyou very much, left shop, walked 500metres to Poundland and picked up a reading pair(which is all I need) which work perfectly well!

Common sense don't wear the £1 ones for too long.

My Optician told me about 10 years ago, that cheap shop reading glasses would do just as good a job as the ones he would prescribe for a heck of a lot more money!
I thought that was very decent of him.

Smow, I have very complicated prescriptions for my lenses and my glasses don't cost me anything like £900. I certainly couldn't see with over the counter readers. Which opticians did you go to and how much were the frames? I always choose from the cheapest range.

Barry, mine is the opticians in my locals parade of shops - Real Eyes. Even I was stunned at the price, considering I only really need them for reading, and even they admitted that my eyesight had barely changed in the last 4 years since I was last there. No way would I pay that!!

And the frames were around £200, but they did keep forcing designer ones onto me.

Have you had an eye test and have a prescription for the lenses you need?

If so, then the £1.99 glasses from Home Bargains is an option. But chances are they will be ill fitting and uncomfortable, so you will be less likely to wear them.

Smurfchops, why don't you take your 'good' glasses with you when you go out?

You need to look at your prescription and see how astigmatic you are. You will not get cheapie specs which fix astigmatism.
If you don't understand your prescription just look for the number under CYL - if it's more than about 1.0 you might have problems in poor light with cheap lenses.

emmie, aren't you entitled to an NHS voucher for your prescription glasses?

I pay around £40 for the frames from my local optician - he also sells frames costing several hundred pounds.
