does anybody know if I have the right to request a file relating to a dispute with a retailer. By this I mean transcripts of phone calls, notes on the file etc

Yes, but it'll probably cost you a tenner.

Under the provisions of the Data Protection Act, you have the right to access any data about you held by a retailer.

You should make your request in writing, marking the letter for the attention of the Data Controller. (I strongly recommend keeping a copy and using recorded delivery). The retailer has the right to charge an administration fee - the maximum fee permissible is �10. (It might be worth phoning first to ascertain this fee, in order that you can enclose it with your letter). The retailer must provide the information within 40 days.
