I have used a very strong plastic bag about 12 inches x 12 inches (freebie from work) then wrapped and taped it up with brown paper, the bag inside stops the brown paper from splitting, also i put a name sticker of the buyer on the plastic bag just in case

I usually put things in a box.
If it's something small, you can try putting in into a large envelope, that would make posting it cheaper.

A lot of things I receive are just folded up and put in a jiffy bag - they reach me ok!
You can use anything you like, provided it's strong enough to get to the other person undamaged! Bear in mind that the lighter the packaging, the cheaper the postage. I use metallic blue bags that I get from Ebay (type it into the search) which are very versatile for clothing. Happy ebaying!
Next time you go shopping, start collecting the Bubble Wrap from the fruit and veg counters. People might give you strange looks with a trolley full but who cares? Get a bit each week, you are recycling and the supermarket are only going to throw it out anyway. Fold clothes nicely, make sure they smell nice first, Put bubble wrap around and sellotape it, then brown paper from Woollies with thick brown parcel tape making sure you secure all the corners. The best value brown paper is from Woolworths. The bubblewrap looks like you have made the effort and will help in case the brown paper gets torn, as Patricia H said, also it will keep it try in case it is delivered in the rain. Don't forget to fill out a Certificate of Posting - get a pad full next time you go to the post office. These are free and are proof of posting. Good luck !
