In the eighties my friends and I used to wear fred perry polo shirts and tank tops. Tiered ra-ra skirts and boob tubes were good for disco-ing. for older ladies there were jackets with massive shoulder pads a la Dynasty.
ha ha *feels old at the 'what did they wear in the 80s' bit* For me it was a white sleeveless t-shirt with 'Relax' logo on front, black tank top, baggy jeans with the elasticated bottoms and zip pockets on the side and loafers. Of course with white socks or fluorescent socks (different colour for each foot) Haircut was a 'crew cut' grade 2 with daft long fringe.
White shirts with ridiculously frilly lapels and sleeves, wide belts and baggy trousers with Pixie boots. My friend had loads of pixie boots and I used to think he was so cool!
Sorry just read your post properly - you could still get away with the George Michael look - with the bright suit and hawaiian type shirt thing - WHAM were out in the 80's and make up on guys was still big with the New Ramntic thing still going on especially in DURAN DURAN.
You could have got away with the leotard, trousers and leg warmers but maybe that's a look you don't need or want
