Supermarket overkill?
3 Answers
I live in Herefordshire and currently in Hereford a new Asda store is being built.Hereford is not a very big place, population about 65000,but it already has 2 Tesco stores,a Sainsbury,a Morrison(built as a Safeway),Lidl and Aldi are also represented. This seems a bit over the top to me but I wonder if there are even smaller towns with more stores

I live in Shirley, and part of Solihull, which is on the edge of Birmingham.
From my house, in the space of three miles, I can get to 2 Tesco's, 2 Sainsbury's, 2 Morrisons, 1 Waitrose, 1 Aldi and a Marks and Spencer food shop, plus loads of other small stores like Spar etc.
Our local council are planing to build an Asda, and loads of other shops, right in the middle of Shirley high st, taking part of the local park to do so.
Access to the Asda's is by a smallish suberban road.
As you can image, there has been an almightly row going on around here.
What is most annoying it is the council who have to give permission for it to go ahead, but it is their plan so they are hardly going to turn it down.

I live in seaside town with a population of around 23,000 peope.Within a ten mile radius we have four Tescos ,one Asda ,two Sainsburys ,three Morrisons ,Aldi and Lidl.
If you don't have a car you are stymied for want of a better word !. You cannot get to these places in my area by public transport ..only Lidl and Aldi.
Why the government bow to the power of the big three supermarkets is beyond me.Our High Streets which should be the hub of small towns and villages are becoming ghost towns. The small shop ..eg local butcher, greengrocer ,hardware shop,Post office ...are being priced out of existence by high business rates and undercutting by the big supermarkets..
We should support local businesses and markets as much as possible.
Yes ..I am afraid I have to shop in these sterile places from time to time ....but not through choice.
This may be an old fashioned view to those who know nothing different .But you can't beat personal service from people who know their onions.....pardon the pun !
This is one example of where they didn't win in one of our much loved local towns.
