Morning guys.If you were to try and cut down your weekly shopping bill, what items would you say you could get away with the value/basic version and what items would you feel you have to buy the named brand/quality make?

For example,I think you need to buy quality washing up liquid, but you can get away with basic flour, jam and tissues.

What do you think?

Mostly I choose value anyway apart from Beans tescos value ones are like bullets. But I by most of my toiletries from Savers which is a bargain. Its not because I'm not but I dont see the point in spending alot more money on basically the same thing.
Hi Pink,

Do you want us to do a quick whip round?

(shakes tin at all the ABers)

Id never ever buy cheap bread, its tastes of too many chemicals.

Shops own butter / marg tastes no different though

Cheap loo roll never lasts as long.

lol,no redcrx - I was just browsing round the supermarket the other day and its amazing how the prices vary on some items which probably aren't much different.

I agree 4getmenot - dont think you can really buy cheap baked beans - the sauce is all runny!
Actually I dont go for Tesco value that is a bit too cheap but Tesco own brand if you get me.
I buy branded washing up liquid, toilet rolls and kitchen cleaner.

I buy economy kitchen rolls, coffee, washing detergents and conditioners, jam for cooking, flour, salt and so on.

Buy just one of each item. If you are not happy with it, you haven't really lost anything.

If you can afford to, buy toilets rolls, coffee, cleaning materials (anything which will not 'go off') in bulk when they are on very special offers.
Economy: tinned tomatoes, skimmed milk, broccoli

Branded: baked beans, tomato ketchup, salad cream

Tip for loo roll - use both sides.

The russians ok she shoplifts
i think they need to be tried and tested and varies store to store and product to product. for example the only mayo i buy is asda smart price (which is yummy best ever) but tesco version is yuk. i could go on and list other products some from each major store that are good and others rubbish. All a matter of taste i guess

Yes Ethel - I agree ,especially on the quality toilet rolls, the basic ones are much smaller and quite rough!

both sides of the loo paper??
a lot of the branded name items are a rip off i try out stores own make and if i dont like them , then i would return to the branded names . good morning

Morning crete.Ok guys, what do you think about value coke and lemonade??
Yep I buy the old cola
Question Author
I buy the cheapo lemonade but b/f insists on Pepsi Max!
tescos value cola is best for cleaning toilets :)

cheaper than even value toilet cleaner too
Makes no difference to me as I only buy it to mix with my malibu. Stay on water or squash any other time, cola rots your teeth.
whereas Malibu is good for you eh 4getmenot? :)
I agree with your bf, cheap lemonade is good but have to have proper Coke/Pepsi!!

other than that it varies - proper beans, coffee, bread and mayo, other than that I'm not too fussed

A xXx
does malibu taste like coconut ?
No but if Im rotting my teeth on coke I may as well get drunk on Malibu :-) just think if thats what cola does to your toilet what does it do to your teeth. And yes crete malibu is coconut rum
