.......and when I drove past our local Sainsburys earlier today the car park was jam packed!!! I totally agree with you. Think other supermarkets, Morrisons, Asda, Tesco, were certainly not open today. three cheers for them!!!! Happy New Year
Our local Tesco's was - and I went shopping there.

What's wrong with opening on New Years Day?
Crikey. Obviously you don't work in a supermarket? I DO & I do not like being under pressure to work on a bank holiday. Although it is not compulsory to work these days, there is a certain amount of pressure to do so. I like to spend time with my family & have the odd day off. With many shops open 24 hours Monday - Friday & Saturdays till 10pm then personally I do not think it is necessary for them to open on days like boxing day or new years day as everyone has enough time to do their shopping during these times. Just wait till Easter Sunday when ALL supermarkets (except the likes of Sainsburys Local or Tesco Express etc) are shut. Just wanted to express my opinion.
nothing wrong with your opinion, and I do know a few people who work in retail who moan about the very same thing - HOWEVER, all the peopel I know go the pub on New Years Eve and have no problems defending their right to have a drink at the expense of the bar persons (not to mention police, hospital staff etc etc).
