I don't wear make up very often and i have problems with foundation looking patchy and flaky in places. Can anyone recommend a good foundation (that is affordable) and offer any tips for applying it.

make sure your skin is adequately moisturised first - use spf 15 product - boots, superdrug, supermarket own brands are fine.Leave to absorb for about 10 mins.Use a make-up sponge - slightly dampen with tepid tap water first and apply your foundation lightly and blend, blend, blend.
You get what you pay for - but some of the cheaper brands - maybelline,l'oreal, rimmel are fine - what suits one person may not suit the next so it's a case of try and see!
Hope this helps :-)
I apply my foundation with a makeup foundation brush it leaves your skin looking flawless I find I don't get any dry bits at all as I am not using my fingers to rub it in which oftern causes flacky bits. Also if you are using the correct colour your foundation should not look patchy.

Hey.. I swear by matte mousse by maybellene. I think it is one of the best foundations out there. I have never had any trouble with it and it rarely goes patchy or flaky. To apply it I would say use some type of sponge, I have a square one and it works wonders. It costs about 6 but you only need a small amount so therefore lasts for a while. It is a wkd foundation.
I agree with BaybeeJo. Tried Maybeline dream matte mouse last week and love it. Goes on easily with a sponge, covers, lasts, doesn't go greasy and you hardly need any!
I recently decided to try Maybelline "Wonder Finish" makeup. It goes on as a liquid and quickly dries to a silky powder. I smooth it on quickly with my finger tips and a tiny bit goes a long way. Everyone says it looks great.

Thank for all your answers.
Do moisturise first, but don't apply yr base straightaway. Do ask advice at make-up counters (eg, Boots, Debenhams, House of fraser etc). Ask for samples to take away, if they won't give them, don't buy anything. I once read that in a magazine. Colour match is important too. I've bought foundation on recommendation from these counters but these are matched under artificial light, when you're under natural light, they don't look right. Foundation is the hardest thing to buy. Good luck!!!
