I've decided to take a dress back to Miss Selfridge but pulled the tag off and lost the receipt. After digging through soiled rubbish for over an hour, i finally found the tag... but still no receipt.

How likely am i to be able to return the dress? I'm skint so desperate for the money back, never worn it, still smells new and only bought it last Thursday.

Thanks

I used to work in retail and am sorry to say that you defo won't be able to get a refund! All they'll give you is an exchange...which obviously won't help your money situation!
Depends on the shop, actually. Some are better than others, but you can't blame them if they won't refund you. It used to be common practice for people to buy stuff (we assume), wear it, and then make an excuse to get a refund, and with this in mind, shops've wised up to the practice - hence asking for receipts and for items to retain their tags.
you can but try

wouldn't make any difference if you had the receipt or not, it's the tag thats important - it supposedly shows you haven't worn it

if you paid using a visa, you *may* get a refund because that may be classed as proff of purchase if you show your visa statement.

but- depends on the shop
If you have paid by card they can trace the payment on the back office system, i you paid cash and can tell them the exact time more or less and date, they may let you have it, it depends how you approach it, if you came into me and explained, and asked if i could check the back office system for the garment's SKU number going thru on a particular till at an approx time paid by cash, they will know you are genuine and may accept that. You need to ask them to look, it is always worth being really really nice to the staff, and above all, honest. Your big problem is the tag, if you cannot re-attach it then they can simply say no exchange, never mind refund.
Yup - all the answers above are correct - you are likely to be able to get en exchange, could possibly get a refund if you paid by card and can tell them when you bought it.

However, just so that you know, the shop is under no legal obligation to give you either.
