thought i best ask this as a separate question too but its a second part to question 590447

i ordered 3 pairs of shoes from an ebay shop, and needed to return one pair because they were badly damaged. the ebay shop agreed to refund me the postage i had to pay to return the damaged item, which came to 3.80 (yay), as I wanted an exchange. The next day i checked my account and the shop said that sorry they didn't actually have any more stock, so were just refunding me instead (they didn't ask, just told me. They had others colours in too)...but only the cost of the shoes in the first place, not the postage i'd paid to return them! his argument was that he gave me a discount for buying 3 pairs (which was he only charged postgage once instead of 3 times) but his listing clearly stated further items from him are charged at 1 each, so i admit initially he should've charged me 5.50 not just 3.50 - being new to ebay, i asked him for a discount on the items which he said he couldn't do, but he'd adjust the postage for me instead.

...are you still with me?? :D

anyway, as i've returned the very damaged pair, essentially the slate should be wiped clean with these? so therefore

1st pair 3.50 + 2nd pair 1 = 4.50.
I've paid out 3.50 + 3.80 = 7.30

i feel like i'm over reacting a bit (its less than 3, i know), but i also feel like i'm being taken for a mug so I'm standing my ground, especially as i'm less than 10 days into my ebay account.

whats everyone else thoughts on this new chapter?

sorry for whinging :P

You have every right to whinge and should stand your ground and insist on the return postage being refunded.

I was put off eBay by the ridiculous postage charges that the sellers are allowed to charge and rarely buy anything and then only if the postage is reasonable.

Have been selling from an eBay shop for a few years now and do not charge at all for postage. Also have a Freepost address so that if anything has to be returned (sometimes for a change of size) it does not cost the customer anything. Have had this policy for nearly 20years in my mail-order business and do not intend to change. I firmly believe that if I advertise goods at a certain price, then that should be the price to the customers door. After all I am mail-order only so it is not as if there is anything `extra` about delivery.

eBay, from time to time, do make half-hearted attempts to try and control the situation and do now give some benefit to those of us who do not charge but I really think it is up to the buyers to ignore goods with stupid postage costs.

totally agree with you jenny tals, it is a bit disgusting how much some of them charge for 'postage', though in this guys case it did cost 3.80 for a 1st class recorded delivery. i love sellers like you, send me a link to one of your items and i'll put you in my favourite shops!

thanks x
