Does anyone know if you can put photos onto T-shirts at home or does it have to be done by a company? If so, anyone know of a company near Derby that would do it?

Some people seem to get good results from using those transfers. Others find that they're very fiddly and/or the images don't survive many washes. (It's really important to read the instructions carefully, and to follow them to the letter).
If you'd rather use a professional service, most High Street photo-processing shops can do it for you, as can the photo counters in the big supermarkets. Asda even let you order online, by uploading your photo. (7.80 for an adult T-shirt, 5.84 for a child's one):

tesco's do the transfer paper that you print your picture onto. it's not too bad i find. remember to reverse your picture on the computer first so when it prints it's backwards and so when ironed on is then the right way round. ho and you need something like the reccommednded brown paper bag. this is put, say, inside the t-shirt when you iron. best on light coloured fabric or you can't see too well.
