my friends work are issuing interest free loans for computer equiptment but the company will only issue a cheque. We want to buy a PC but which shops will accept a cheque?

i would expect that the company will want to see proof that the funds are going on a computer and not just spent anywhere by the employee

speak to your employer and explain that most companies are highly unlikely to accept a cheque from someone not present.
as i said, there are 2 ways to do this. get your company to open a PC worl Business account (PC may even be cheaper that way but allow for vat) or ask a local supplier to deal direct with your employer.

call the local store and ask.
small businesses do take cheques, but some large stores may not now, like supermarkets.
