Get fit machines
What are the main things to look for when buying exercise equipment? A friend of mine is looking at getting a running machine but the prices vary hugely.
Also, are the "abs gadgets" any good?

The main price difference between treadmills is as to whether they are motorised or non-motorsed. The best makes on the market such as trimline and tunturi are of such a good quality that they can be used in a gym. Then there are the cheaper makes such as V-fit these are the most popular as they are so much cheaper but the only have basic features. These are suitble for home use only and will not last as long as a tunturi treadmill. The more expensive machines have many more programmes that will make the workout moe enjoyable and therefore the treadmill will be used more often. A lot of people stop using their treadmills after a few weeks as they are bored of the lack of prgrammes.
As for the ab toners, these are a gimmick and are really only any use for people undergoing physiotherapy. They are no comparison to a proper physical workout and are basically a waste of money. Hope this helps
The abs toning device that looks like a big blue woodlouse on wheels, with a handle on each side, (get the picture??!) actually does work. They sell them in Argos and they cost about 10.
Also, the sit up frames are useful in as much as they help prevent the common mistakes in form that people make when doing this potentially quite dangerous excersise. Crunches, lifting the legs to the abs whilst keeping the neck still, are safer and just as effective.
