Does anyone out there think that having music playing in shops adds to the retail experience? Personally, I hate it and given the option will not shop in a premises where music is playing, music stores excepted.

Absolutely hate it. Another thing that gets me is how warm it is in some shops. Many a time I`ve gone in to a shop to look for an item of clothing, but due to the temp in the shop I`ve walked out.

I don't notice it after a while. We have a designer outlet near us and some shops play music which is more to the taste of 'young-uns' but that doesn't put me off if theres something i want to buy (he says, sitting in his Bench hoodie)
I personally like it. It gives me something to listen to in the 3 hours I am waiting for the missus and kids to buy something.
It works. They spend stupid amounts on money trying to discover what kind of music makes people spend the most. They change it to suits costomers.
Depends on the music mostly. I work in shops where music and ads are played, and in some of them it is very irritating (well I really don't want to listen to the same songs and ads repeated every hour or two) in others the volume is kept down and it's just mildly pleasant background noise, though I do think some of the track choices could be improved !
In some shops they have smells wafting to entice you to buy stuff. The fresh baked bread is heavenly, the bacon wafts make you feel hungry, the coffee makes you head straight to the cafe' (I never go down the Toilet Roll aisle)

My favourite secondhand bookshop (where browsers are always offered a free coffee, even if they've been in dozens of times before without actually buying anything!) sometimes has music on in the background (usually classical or jazz) but they also display a notice stating that they'll turn it off on request. Now that's REAL customer service!

I like the sound of that shop Chris. I have hundres of books, quality books not rubbish paperbacks. Any chance of telling me where the shop is?

Have heard (rumour?) that shops play relaxing music in the morning/afternoon to make you browse longer and buy more but play fast music in the evenings to rush you so they can close. Is it true there are subliminal messages in the music-'Buy Beans' etc. Used to think my supermarket had a trapped bird but it is a seagull noise at the fish counter!
