My friend is having a baby and I haven't the slightest idea what to get her. She's having a baby boy, any ideas on what I should get her? Thanks

Ask her if there's anything she needs
why is there this need to buy something before baby arrives? wait until he is born and then give a gift.
Time is a gift that many overlook, offer to do her ironing or deliver a nice home cooked meal to her and allow her some time with her baby.

if you want to get a gift then wait and see what else she has

Someone else asked about presents for new born a few weeks ago. I mentioned getting a sleeping bag with a 2.5 tog rating. These things are brilliant especially for babies who have a tendancy to kick off their bed clothes during the winter.
I've ordered one since I saw your post tigger, sounds like a great thing
tiggers right - they are great to have. make sure you get one that is easy to open from bottom so that you can change baby without hassle.
They do some reasonably priced sleeping bags in Primark and Matalan. They don't have tog ratings but they still do the job perfectly.

I don't know what I would have done without them jb. Lt Tiggs would kick everything off him from the day he was born! Lol
also the supermarkets do them in their baby clothing ranges. I usually used sainsburys or matalan ones
I've got ones from Primark and Matalan Red. The ones from Mothercare etc. are like duvets but can be over £20.
I love this website for baby showers....

Yet another US consumerist pressure-point swallowed whole by the British.
Very pleased for the mother and hope the birth / next 20 years go well but for gods' sakes --- if you want to do some good with your money give a donation to a charity and offer to babysit or do housework when the child is born. that's REALLY useful.
it used to be unlucky to buy for babies before they are born and I have to say I still feel that way. about two years ago some friends of a friend who was expecting twins decided to throw a baby shower and were giving all sorts of ideas. I apologised but said I would like to wait until the babies were born, sadly 2 days before the baby shower and 9 weeks before their due date the babies died. I am sorry to be full of doom and gloom but whilst I know the planned baby shower did not kill them I do feel it was bad luck to arrange it. That being said - I have heard that things to pamper the new mum are recommended gifts, even if you wait until baby is born x
mosaic-setting up for a baby-the first in particular-is a very expensive business for a couple. There are so many basics to buy,so it is nice if some of the necessaries come via a 'shower'...whether clothing, car seats-or anything else needed.

Yes-a baby shower may seem like another opportunity for stores to make ££ off us gullible consumers, but there is practicality behind it as long as folk don't get carried away with spending. Actually-celebrating a baby's birth with gifts is not a new thing.

I agree with pinki-babygrows and vests are perfect if in doubt.
Joanne...I would guess that over the course of human history, millions of babies have been bought for BEFORE they were born.
*joannie10*.....sorry hun
yes I am quite sure they have been bought for but other than parents to be ensuring they have the things they will immediately need it is really necessary?
Well....I grew up with the concept of baby showers, and the idea that we were tempting fate never was a consideration. It was simply seen as a way to celebrate, and prepare for,the impending arrival. Maybe not 'necessary'...but nice none-the-less to help new parents to set up....and also good to be on the receiving end, when you haven't a clue what's needed when starting out.
i held a baby shower at my house for a work colleague a few years ago. there was a complete mixture of gifts, most were small practical things like dummies, trainer cups, a small home-made hamper of baby toiletries, a pack of bibs, a couple of hand knitted cardies, a pack of disposable nappies. it was a lovely evening, the mum to be was fussed over and we oldies were all able to tell our 'birth' tales. the evening was about all the girlies getting together rather than any sort of gift competition. and we all bought the baby a proper gift when it was born.
