I'm after buying some summer dresses for my 2 year old daughter.

I like the old fashioned looking ones that are short and then you put the little knickers/shorts underneath.

They are sort of smock looking. I'm trying to describe them the best I can, but they look like the ones that Shirley Temple used to wear.

Does anyone know the proper name for these are checking on the internet isn't bringing anything up?

Many thanks

put 'girl dress smocking' into the eBay search box, quite a few come up - and also some links to shops which sell them.
On the button, boxy.

Your nearest bet would be to search for "child's smock dress"
isn't Mothercare/Adams etc full of that kind of stuff come the summer?

This type that sort of smocks from the very top, rather than the middle.

little girl dresses like you described were very popular in 60-70^s worn with ankle socks and sandles.
Ahm that - as you said - is a smock dress, not a dress with smocking. I can't see anything quite like that on eBay at the moment. Have you tried Laura Ashley shops?

..and a lot earlier than that, anne - baby boys used to wear them in the 50s too, I can still see my brother in a fetching pale blue number.

I wonder if you can still get the knickers. I remember that a lot of them, especially for the younger girls were actually plastic frilly knickers which covered the big terry nappies. There isn't much call for them these days as virtually everyone uses disposable nappies.
some dress sets have them included
Blimey - I had a brainwave as I typed in my above answer and found this

I found it by googling 'old fashioned childrens clothes' , so you may be able to find some more sites.
