The Company was founded by Hugh Fraser and James Arthur in 1849 as a small drapery shop in Glasgow, Scotland trading as Arthur and Fraser. In 1879 the current flagship store on Oxford Street in London was opened. The company was owned and run by successive generations of Frasers for the next 100 years until the Al Fayed family bought the business in 1985.

As one of the best known names on the high street, House of Fraser has presented customers with an unrivalled nationwide department store for more than 150 years. Like fellow retailers John Lewis and Selfridges, it is known for its popularity with the middle classes and perceived exclusivity.

House of Fraser currently has more than 60 stores across the country in a mixture of town and city centre and regional centre shopping locations. They are generally the largest or second largest department store in their local market.
