Women Spend Millions On Unworn Clothes

We have all done it. The sales have come around and we have stood outside our favourite shop for a couple of hours waiting to get in. When the doors open you run in a grab everything you can get your hands on in your size. But seriously how much of it are we ever really going to wear? Well it seems that many of us are spending far too much on clothes that are never worn.

Each woman goes out and buys an average of over £300 worth of clothes every year which she will never wear, claims a home insurance survey.
This adds up to slightly-scary total of £7.3 billion of unwanted clothing residing in wardrobes across the country.

According to the home insurance poll, 86 per cent of all women admit to buying and hoarding clothes that are no longer fashionable, do not fit or they simply don't like anymore.

The total expenditure at this rate over the course of a shopper's life time adds up to a massive £12,810 of unworn clothes.

"The research clearly shows that many householders are guilty of buying new clothes in the sales which will never get worn," said a home insurance spokesman.

"However, few are likely to realise how much money they are spending over the years in this way."

But it’s not just women who have hundreds of pounds of clothes going to waste in their closets – men are nearly as bad. On average, men have nine pieces of clothing that they haven’t worn in the last year. With an average value of just over £12 this adds up to an astonishing £7,900 worth of unwanted clothes over the average working life.

The system works out for the best in the end, however, with the main recipient of all these unloved items being local charity shops. More than 70 per cent of us will bag up their unwanted items and take them to the local store.
