Paints For Metal Surfaces

I'm looking for a matt or satin paint for metal surfaces ie old biscuit tins.Any recommendations from crafty Abers will be appreciated.
The usual DIY brands have limited colour choices or are only available in high gloss, and I'm unsure which of the 'craft shop' types will work on the surface I have in mind.
I'm not fond of using aerosols, but am interested to discover if the finish and colours I would like are only available in aerosol form.

Mosiac, my first instinct would be to use enamel paint, the ones that come in the tiny pots (non-aerosol) that you paint model railway with, but that might not be cost effective for a large number of tins. I've used old car paint in sample pots to paint metal before with good effect.
Found this link whilst looking that might be of interest to you. It suggests different paint types for tins and how to remove the old paint from the tin first to get a smoother finish...:

suggest you also look into the decorative painting for narrow boats and canalware - "vandyking" or roses and castles - I believe most of that's done with acrylics now, which is cheap enough for volume, can be matte finished and plenty of colour choice

use this stuff as a primer on a grease free surface, then use what you like on top. Finish with a coat of spray varnish.

Hammerite is good paint for metal, Mosaic.

Thaks Tony - I've been experimenting with Hammerite that I 'have in' and it certainly covers well and bonds nicely. However as far as I can see their finishes are only in gloss or 'hammered', plus they don't half pong. If possible I'd like a matt or satin finish and a lower overall odour.
