Why can I not find this family in 1851 and 1861 census?
Parents - Samuel Lee & Betty Lee
Children - Edward born 1844
Hannah born 1847 - both born in Heptonstal, Yorks.

zillions of reasons - some manchester ward records were flooded - but they dont tell you

mis-spelling as Leigh.
werent in when the census man came around

moved and then moved back

One of my relations disappeared - Bridget Angus - and seems I speculate without evidence - that she was known as Bridge for short and otherwise Mrs Angus. So when the fella came around, they couldnt reconstruct her long name and came up with Bridge-eena

and yup she is there as Bregena Angus.

We had another Fineas - which we always called Fine-ee-as
He comes up in one as Phenis.... heavens not as a result of large part of him I hope ?

No it gives a victorian clue as to how they said it.... Feen-us ( sudduv like Rolfie's "Feel-us") and when the clerk came around, noone had any idea at all how to spell/ write the syllables Feen-us - so they guessed......

One census - theere were contemporary complaints ( 1852) that at least 10% had been omitted

I don't know Jack- I've searched ancestry just too and can't find any of them. My only thought is our family did get stuck with an almighty wrong mis-spelling of the surname which was nothing like the name, and I wonder if yours has been mis-transcribed although I can't think what to.

Thanks all for your interest in the missing Lee family.
Edward married in Gateshead- have loads about his side of things but his father, Samuel, is hard to pin down as there are so many Samuel Lee who wed a Betty Crowther - one marriage 1832 Heptonstal is interesting but children born 1844, 1847!
