DIY walking sticks

I'm interested in making walking sticks as a hobby. I have been given a number of lengths of mixed timber, ash, hazel & birch, all of which are curved. I need to straighten them. Any ideas on the best method would be appreciated.

I knew there were books out there as my friends husband has one or two, though I'm not sure he's actually found the time to make any yet! Good luck!
