This heading seemed to be the only one that was vaguely appropriate - so let's give it a try:

When I was a kid, in the 50s and early 60s, you could get a little grey message/drawing board which was comprised of a clear plastic writing surface, a layer of a grey waxy substance beneath it, and a little blunt plastic spike.

You could draw or write on the top surface, and wherever the point pressed on it, it would leave a dark line where the plastic surface would stick to the wax beneath.

If you wanted to clear it for re-use, you pulled a tab on one side, which would draw a card strip from one side to the other, separating the 2 layers and leaving it clear grey again.

I have looked for these little items everywhere, and nobody seems to have a clue as to what they were called, whether they are still made, and if they are, where to get them.

Anybody remember them, or know what they were called? More importantly, anybody know where to get them?

Look on Google for 'magic doodle board (or pad)'.
You could also check on eBay for 'doodle board'.

I used to love these, and I'm pretty sure my kids have had them (they are teenagers now). I'd try places that have stationery. There's a post office in my nearest town that might sell them. If I remember when I'm next in there I'll see if they have any and get the details off it for you.

you can get them in small toy shops that sell joke toys and pocket money gifts etc..other than that check in local pound shops.

The Early Learning Centre sells in The Night Garden doodle boards for about �20. These are lovely ones for children, but you can get smaller, cheaper ones in most toy/gadget shops.

Hey, thanks everybody! All good helpful answers - but especially Jules001. That link (don't worry about the size - it's not important...) goes exactly where I needed to go, and I'll be making a purchase very soon.
They suddenly seemed to be a great solution to the problem of making instant notes or reminders which you only need to keep for a short time, without having to keep throwing away endless bits of paper!
Such simple technology!
