plating British victorian stamps

I collect British victorian stamps but am having so much difficulty plating such stamps as penny blacks/reds which do not have the plate nos inscribed on them. I own various stamp catalogues including stanley gibbons specialised catalogue. I need ahelp with a starting point. Also is there any other website I could go to to help start me off
