A famous pianist, who died a couple of years back. Famous not so much for his accomplished playing as for his showmanship: spangly jackets, big hair et al.
Wladziu Valentino Liberace was born in the U.S. in 1919. He shot to fame as a television performer in the early 1950's, noted for his flamboyant stage shows, his trademark candelabra, and his amazing, if under-rated musicianship. High camp at a time when homosexuality was illegal, Liberace (he dropped his hard-to-pronounce Christian names) famously sued a British national newspaper for a feature which cast a slur on his masculinity - the action was successful, and substantuial damages were paid to the star. Remaining popular until his death in 1987, Liberace was a pioneer of camp TV at a far more reactionary and inhibited time in history - stars of today like Dale Winton and Graham Norton owe him a massive debt of gratitude.
To add to the wonderfully informative answer already given, there is a Liberace Museum in Las Vegas, Nevada,USA that draws hundreds of guests each day. Even this long after his death, he remains an icon.
I seem to remember he was also the villain in one episode of Batman!
