Vera Lynn, later Dame Vera Lynn, was the British 'forces' sweetheart' in the second world war, some hits being 'Bluebirds over, the White Cliffs of Dover', and probably the most famous 'We'll meet again'.

As far as I know, she is still alive, in her eighties, and lives in Kent.

Yes, she is still alive. Although 'The White Cliffs of Dover' which features in the film Dr Strangelove is the most famous song she sang, she also sang other songs like 'We'll Meet Again'.
I think firefly's memory is on the blink. As I recall, at the end of Strangelove, it was 'We'll meet again' that was played as the mushroom clouds got higher, not 'White Cliffs'.
Yes, it was "We'll Meet Again" in Dr Strangelove. As for Dame Vera, she continued to enjoy considerable success after the war ended, including the 1952 US million-seller "Auf Weidersehen Sweetheart". Nowadays, she often turns up at fund-raising events for war veterans and the like.
She was part of a terrible wartime trimumvirate of singerettes, togethere with Anne shelton and Gracie Fieds. They all entertained the troops and people on the home front. Sometimes against their will. Spike Milligan referred to Gracie as "Oh Chr*st here she comes" in his war diaries, and implied that it was her sining that triggered the 1944 eruption of Vesuvius. Vera is one of those icons, Like Edith Piaf, which a nation rmembers with fondness. Dont ask me why. Awful maudlin songs and a voice like an air-raid siren. Come back the beverly sisters, all is forgiven.
