My other half has started referring to herself in the third person - which I hate.....people who speak in the third person have always struck me to be very very pretentious.

Anyway, turns out there is a girl on Big Brother who has this very annoying trait - My wife is a huge BB fan (am catching up on my reading since this tripe has been on, but that's by the by).

Anybody else find this annoying?

Referring to oneself in the third person has always be regarded as a sign of a massive ego. Remember Maggie Thatcher's " We are a Grandmother" statement, perhaps you could point out to your partner that if she doesn't kick the third person habit she might end up like Mrs T.

She didn't realise she was doing it, so is going to make a conscious effort to stop it.

Octavius doesn't like it either
HATE it!   It kind of gives me the creeps and I think it makes people sound so dumb.
From your other posts Ducati I judge you to be very sensible and plain-speaking and reading your question I couldn't help but visualise your scowling derision at the third person bit, which made me laugh out loud and frighten my dog. Thanks v.much!

Thank you.
I hate it, I can't imagine that in Zimbabwe where Makosi is from they all refer to themselves in the third person I think she is just egomanic personally, if any of my mates start doing it I will go mad!
I am intrigued, please could someone write down a couple of sentences which would give me an example of what is going on when people speak in the third person like this. I have been making some things up myself to just to get a feel for it, but am not sure if I'm right. It sounds as if I am a mad woman when I do it!
bernardo thinks that it is a bourgeois careerist pomposity which has the tendency of undermining the cohesion of the collective consciousness and degrading the solidarity and unity of the working class
We prefer to refer to ourself in the second person plural.
You refer to yourself in the second person. You don't really know why, as all it does it confuse everyone, including yourself. Half the time you don't know who you're talking to, and neither do you. You're going for a lie down now - you have a headache coming on.
