Dealing with a certain type of person

Okay - have you ever known someone who acts like nothing surprises them very much?
Or that they're a "The glass is half empty" and/or "I've seen better" type?
Well what do you do with someone like that?
I know someone, (we'll call him John, =D) who is like that. Nothing seems to make him very happy. And I know there are things on this God-given earth that would make him smile, or surprise him.
I don't know, natural wonders, or seeing certain fantastic things that he never stopped to look at or recognize before.
Like the other day I went to the beach and just admired how small each grain of sand was, how in one handful you have over a million of them, so there probably isn't even a number we've discovered yet to name how many there are on the entire beach. It was nice to notice something that people ignore entirely when they get wrapped up in their work-loaded, busy lives.
Can I have suggestions for John and his bleak outlook on life? Things to spice his up a bit? To throw him into a realization that there ARE awesome things in life?
Could I have suggestions like places I could take him, things I could show him, etc etc?

Maybe John is surprised, fascinated, disgusted and delighted, but doesn't like to show his emotions or let people know how he is feeling.
Maybe he has to have a feeling of calm within his personal being and can't afford to let himself have 'highs' if they run the risk of also producing 'lows'.
Poor John.
That's just the way some people are, sometimes folk are just very blase about everything they come across. I'm afraid I agree with wolfgang and mystress, leave him be. If you think he's actually depressed then talk to him, but having someone trying to get you excited about what they find interesting is very annoying. If he's always been this way then maybe it's that aspect of his personality which you like, sometimes opposites attract and he may be just as bemused by your excitement by the small things.
If he means that much to you then leave him alone. People only change when they want to because they want to. As I interpret your post, you are making a judgement that your outlook on life is better than his and that he would be a better/happier person if he was more like you. You don't know this. Maybe you don't know him as well as you think that you do? Be aware also that if you push him he may stop listening to you.
