The Islanders like people who are polite and friendly much as any where else. The people who live on the mainland are more accepting of traits of behaviour, manners etc that Islanders find alarming. I relocated therefore not a genuine I am classed as an overer! I came here as the quality of life is better with more sincerity ,less materialistic.People coming to the IoW on holiday maybe do not portray their true colours giving the Islanders a false perspective. And on the whole they are far from glum! They are genuine and warm ,friendly and caring, just as the main of the mainlanders are.
Many years ago Islanders regarded Mainlanders as 'foreigners' and were viewed with a great deal of suspicion, but nowadays I doubt whether there are many true Isle of Wight originals left.
The life is slower and the true Island speech is slower but they are no different than anyone else in the UK. You will always have your miseries whether it be Newport in Wales or Newport IOW. A whole island race cannot be lumped together because of a few people who perhaps were just having a rotten day.... It's a beautiful place - and rightly called England in miniature.
The Isle of Wight is not exactly a long way from the mainland, so I don't think people there can be that different! In fact it's only been a separate county for about 30 years - before 1974 it was considered part of Hampshire.
I think it's a lovely area of the country and I've always found the people are just as friendly there as anywhere else.
