3 sabres on bridges

I keep seeing bridges with a very distinctive picture on them. It's three curved swords, a bit like sabres, one above the other, and they are on the ends of the bridges. Is there any meaning to this?

It is the old coat of arms for the County of Middlesex.

How do I know this? We used it as the county badge when I was a Guide Leader!

jno - for some reason my computer went dolally and said I was in Chatterbank! Arms of Essex makes sense as I'm in Essex, and it's the same as the one on that link. Thanks.
