Shakespeare is still read, in many languages, though I don't know how long this will continue.
I guess it depends on what one considers important. Not sure I'm that fussed on what others think is the most important person. If they put religious involvement having an effect on today's world as important, then so be it. But I'm unsure he'd be there without his evangelists pushing their favourite messiah.
