I know all the words to Camarillo Brillo by Frank Zappa and quite a few others, could I recite them to you now, no, but if the music was playing I soon recall the lyrics.
There are lots of songs I know word for word, I sing along to them when I hear them, whether I sing well is a matter for those forced to listen to me ;)
don't you think its hard to pick up the words by listening .There was a song with the line "our lives have just begun " I thought it was and sung "Hit little lisa with a spoon "
I think I know all the words to Kay Starr's 'rock and roll waltz.' My dad had this song on an old 78 and my sister and I would dress up and sing and dance to it, lol!
It's not difficult weecalf if you want to get a repertoire of songs to download the words of some you like and just go over them until you get them. After all singing away to a favourite is hardly a chore.
