I have always found them peaceful people when I lived near Manchester.

My Nephew asked me this Q yesterday, and I couldn't really give him a straightforward answer.

What answer would you give?

This is something that goes back at least 2000 years and there probably is no single answer to your question. Among those who today "hate" Jews are Arabs and other Muslims due to the very recent history of Israel coming into being and the conduct of their governments, military, officials and some of their ordinary people as part of land issues and their interaction with the Palestinians.

Going through the many historic examples of spectacular anti-Semitism one might suspect the issue is one of mistrust of groups that never quite fully integrate and intermix with their neighbours plus very likely an additional envy over the success, material and otherwise, that many Jews achieve/enjoy. In other words, an us-and-them phenomenon.

Conversely, the public stance that Israel, Israelis and other Jews take, whenever challenged regarding the Palestinian question and other smaller issues, is to play the Holocaust card and (to a lot of people) milk that argument for all it is worth. Some people feel that is eroding/reducing support for the obvious sentiment which correctly puts the wrongs of bigotry, persecution, etc., including anti-Semitism and the rest, as indefensible, unacceptable and unforgivable.

This is not a simple matter/question and it has parallels regarding other groups.
I agree Cheetham Hill and Broughton is very Orthodox, quiet and law abiding...
Certainly in Europe the original mistrust would've been down to religious difference. When Europe were gripped with medieval style Christianity there was simply no room for any other religious belief.
I can only imagine it is because they have settled all over the world, yet don't integrate or mix with other religions. This forms a mis-trust and wariness I would imagine.
My answer is probably very 1 dimensional to some. A very complex question this
In the early days of Christianity one of the common belif was that the Jews had "murdered" Christ the father of their religion forgetting the fact that Christ was in fact a Jew himself.Another and probably more important reason was that Christians were forbidden to charge interest on loans and so were in general reluctant to part with their money. The Jews on the other hand could and did as a result of which some became quite rich. The people who got these loans tended to be quite highly positioned, even the Royal Houses of Europe used them and the occassional anti-jewish pogram was a handy way of clearing your debts.
I think it's because, as a rule, they're insular.

As jd implied that in itself manifests a distrust.

People who have strong beliefs which they choose to carry on into their every day life usually can be quite vociferous, Jews tend not to be.It unsettles people.

I find Jews intriguing and i'm an atheist .
In 1298 Edward I expelled all Jews from England. They were not permitted to return until the time of Oliver Cromwell.
As a footnote to paddywak's post, Jews were left with practically no other options but money lending because many countries banned them from joining guilds or practicing a trade.

In a world where most jobs went father to son, their banned skills would be lost in a couple of generations, so there was no escaping it, short of migrating to a freer part of the world. But the prejudice was widespread, so there was no escape.

At a time when the West was overwhelmingly Christian, Jews were seen as 'different'. This engendered distrust. The same can be seen today with certain minority Christian sects, such as JWs and Mormons. Fortunately it does not lead to persecution.

No never Gromit, will show him that as well, thanks.
I don't dislike any person's providing they are peaceful.
Not hate but an insulated race, unwelcoming to gentiles. Maybe coz their customs are different?
Jews tend to be quite successful and certain people tend to "take it out" on them when they themselves feel threatened by immigration or economic woes. They are an easy target when people are feeling that way.
so Jews feel hated....not saying there aren't risks for them and racism, but Jews feeling hated is a bit different from lots of people hating them.
They dont eat bacon, says it all really!!

Seriously, I wasn't aware of this situation, I've never lived in an area occupied by a Jewish community.
