Aldershot - Whats it like?

We are hopefully moving from Middlesex to Aldershot because we seem to be able to get more for our money.  People we have asked always bring up the Squaddies that are based there and pour scorn on the idea stating that they wouldn't live there but we've found different.

We've heard that the army are pulling out and once that is complete, there will be a cash injection to redevelop the area.

But what are your views? 

We want to live somewhere that actually feels English, will it suit us?  We are a couple in our early thirties, with no kids (yet) and a dog.  We seem to have had an offer accepted on a 3 bed place with a garden which we could never afford if we were to stay in our current location.

Aldershot is a town (1991 pop. 53,665) in Hampshire, S central England. It is the site of the largest military training centre (est. 1854) in the UK. The Minister of Defense appoints most of the town council. Aldershot is within the metropolitan area of London. Industries include engineering and the production of electrical goods. It looks something like this .

I moved from Middlesex to Bracknell last year and although I like being here it is in the middle of nowhere and trying to get local reliable people to fix things is a nightmare.  Thing long and hard - yes you can get more house for your money, but leaving"london'" area you will notice a heck of a difference.

Hi Compostella, We used to live between Farnham and Aldershot up until 3years ago. We liked Aldershot more than Farnham, as it is a more family centered town. The shopping facillities are good and improving.The health centre is going to be the biggest and best for miles around. There are soldiers around, it WAS the largest millitary training centre,however more and more training has been relocated. It is still a Garrison town where the army and civillian families mix very well. Apart from shopping there are many cafe type places, a cinema, a bowling alley, and the usual mix of pubs.There is the millitary museum.  The infrasctucture surrounding the town is excellent providing links to other towns, Guildford,Farnbrough,Basingstoke,etc.  We moved from the mainland for a quieter way of life all together, we enjoyed Aldershot. It has lots of good points.

Hi Compostella by the way the link to the picture of Grovenor Road ( I think)  is not typically Aldershot.

and i thought i was the only bracknellian on here!

i work with a few people who live in aldershot and they're always moaning about the squaddies, chavs and pikeys that occupy most of the town - i have very little personal experience of aldershot, and based on my colleagues' opinions i'm happy to keep it that way!

I also lived between Farnham and Aldershot (moved 2 years ago) and preferred Farnham.  Both towns are pretty small, and do feel 'English' but in different ways (Farnham more pretty market town/Conservative voters, Aldershot prey to the binge drinkers I'm afraid...)  Aldershot's ok though, and you can very easily get to Guildford for proper shopping, nice pubs and restaurants etc.  Also for �5 you can join the sports centre at the garrison and use the sports facilities, which include aerobics, tennis courts and a fantastic 50 metre pool - how I miss it!!

i stayed there myself while working around that area.it has the usual pub chains in the centre along with all the shops.some nice areas around the outskirts.

the night life was a bit roughand ready,but not as bad as where i live.then again its even cheeper here where i live.
