I'm not sure that Bill Gates was actually 'famous' (in the sense that his name was widely known) for anything before Microsoft. He certainly had some achievements, most of which, unsurprisingly, were linked to computers.

Perhaps it was for retaining the rights to licence DOS to other computer manufacturers which at the time was a massive blow to IBM...?
